National Youth Theatre

Scenic Construction and Design
August 2024
Backstage Course
I spent 2 weeks with National Youth Theatre in Rose Buford College training as a backstage member in the scenic construction and design course. In this 2 weeks I worked with a team to produce a 60s moon-landing walk-through set. This featured a 1960s enlarged TV, a space console, seating and a hanging moon. The control panel was build and upholstered and decorated with panels with working lights and switches. The console was very interactive. I also practiced scenic painting and workshop techniques.
Application Task
I responded to 2 design briefs in my application interview. To begin I created a design concept for a stage adaptation of a DR Who special titled The Giggle. I was inspired by Victorian toy theatres featured in the special and conceptualised this into decorating the entire theatre in this style and having the working of the stage reflect with with flying in 2D sets. This would be broken in the end sequence when the antagonist is defeated. Concept art was created using Adobe Illustrator.

The second task was a theatre set for a stage adaptation of Heartstopper, a TV show, originally based of a graphic novel series. I created a 3D model of this set using Blender. I created a dynamic use of flats ideal for quick scene changes.
